Sponsor A Disabled Child

Too often, children with disabilities are ignored. There is constant violation of the human rights and entitlement for children with disabilities, despite access to information being a fundamental human right. Under the Declaration of the rights of persons with disabilities, proclaimed in 1975, children with disabilities are entitled to have their special needs taken into consideration at all stages of social, economic and political planning.

The deaf people in general, do not enjoy their rights and fundamental freedoms in equal circumstances as do hearing people. Children with disabilities are the most neglected children in our society. They are denied access to basic social services.

The majority of their parents are too poor but no option than to beg on the streets. They later end up becoming beggars on the streets and the cycle of poverty continues to have a multiplier effect on them and society. Traditionally, the Zambian society believes that disability is a result of some misfortune in the family brought about by ancestor's witchcraft.  This belief has led to the stigmatization of many children with disabilities.

As a result, some families have resorted to hiding their disabled family members or casting them out of the society. There is a general lack of rehabilitation services, Sign language, policies on education are not articulated, understood, implementing in inclusion program, no financial resources, equipments, supplies and training support, poverty, unemployment, friendly workplace environments, publicity, not enjoying sporting and recreational activities, ignored, violation of the human rights and entitlement, not included in key social, economic and political information campaigns.

As most organizations and Zambian Government departments ignore the importance of mainstreaming disabilities into their program, no services available in sign language and information in Braille. Maboshe Memorial Centre (MMC) is a tax-exempted child sponsorship orphan & vulnerable children humanitarian not-for-profit making NGO decimated by the HIV/AIDS pandemic – providing safe and clean water, school and community feeding programs, improved health and education facilities and an orphan sponsorship program – all funds go directly to the cause – all members are volunteers. Sponsoring an orphan will make a huge difference to a child's life. Children don't ask to be born and when you are born in a country where one in every six adults is living with HIV, into a family that has been infected or affected by HIV/AIDS your life is going to have serious problems.

Inevitably if a child loses one parent from AIDS then the other is likely to die shortly afterwards; if the mother survives then she will be left to support her children usually with no income. Many of these people are in their thirties or forties leaving behind far too many young orphans. Western, Zambia is estimated to have many orphans. To date we hope to sponsor and support over 5000 individual children with disabilities and assist many in education from schools through our disability sponsored program.

The MMC has male and female volunteers who oversee the welfare of children with disability. An estimated 90% of all disabled children in Western, Zambia are not attending school. In Western, Zambia children with physical or mental special needs are able to receive an education, these children are less fortunate. No materials, no equipment or transportation for children in outreach villages who are physically disabled, life is tough for these special. MMC hopes to build and fully equipped a Special Education Classroom, hearing impairment and learning difficulties will be attending school. MMC will support this project through teacher exchange programs and sustainable income-generating activities. Life in Zambia is tough for a school child, especially if you an orphan and have little financial support to pursue your education. Life is even tougher if you are a child with physical or mental disabilities.

MMC has been working on a number of ways that we can help these disadvantaged children. Now thanks to some amazing offers we are able to set up a Special Education department. We hope for generously donation funds to buy the materials for a classroom block to be built in all the ten districts of Western, Zambia. The charity and community will supply the labour costs. We have also hoped to receive grants which will pay for materials and uniforms for the pupils. We hope for support for children with severe disabilities offering on going support through fundraising and the provision of materials. To further enhance this project you can donate a donkey to transport a disabled child to school or sponsor an orphan.

The MMC is also raising funds to purchase donkeys to transport the disabled children who are unable to walk to school. If anyone would like to donate a donkey the cost is $ 100. Children don’t ask to be born and when you are born into a Zambian family the chances of losing your parents at an early sage are very high. The HIV and AIDS in Zambia pandemic has infected or affected almost every family.

One in six adults has the… Sponsor a disability child - give a child a chance to improve their live and give back to their families and communities. The MMC charity will be very much grateful to a number of businesses and grant-giving organizations who will provide us with significant funding which will enabled us to achieve so much, to expand our projects and reach out to other rural communities in the Western Chiefdom, beyond and help us to become a notable NGO in Western, Zambia charity and Worldwide. Getting involved in corporate social initiatives is a great way of lifting a company’s profile, making it more appealing to customers.
